Reminders

WNYFLEC is currently looking for a member to serve on the Executive Board in the position of Historian. This is an Interim position. Responsibilities include attending WNYFLEC-sponsored events and taking photos, developing those photos and storing them in an event album, and storing copies of event programs for future reference. If interested, please contact WNYFLEC President Ellen Connell at econnell@wnyflec.org.

Lend a Hand !

WNYFLEC is an organization that is only as strong as the involvement of its members. Please consider volunteering with the organization in some capacity. We are always looking for individuals to assist with Regional Conference planning, STAR Awards planning, publicity, event registration and more! To help with any of these or other tasks, please click the Volunteer page on the main Menu.

Welcome to WNYFLEC

WNYFLEC began some thirty years ago due to the organizational efforts of then NYSAFLT Directors Robert Murphy, Anthony Papalia and Joseph Vocolo. Tony was the moving force, but NYSAFLT urged directors to meet with local constituents to learn their concerns. After many planning meetings, an organizational committee wrote a constitution and prepared a slate of officers. Both were accepted at the June 1970 meeting. The first officers were: Tony Papalia, SUNY at Buffalo, President; Robert Murphy, West Seneca, Vice-President; Alma Adolph, Secretary-Treasurer.

WNYFLEC was the first regional foreign language organization granted a charter of recognition by NYSAFLT. The charter of recognition processes were instituted during Maryalice Seagrave's NYSAFLT presidency in 1977. Alice Werynski, a NYSAFLT Director, requested and received the first charter in February, 1978. Twelve such groups are now in existence across the state.

WNYFLEC has, since its inception, been a driving force in providing its members with up-to-date and interesting information through its frequent meetings, the Regional Conference, Foreign Language Week Kickoff, and a variety of cultural events.

It provides to its members the possibilities of winning scholarships, awards, and grant monies annually. Activities such as the S.T.A.R. Ceremony and Poster Contest directly involve the students of WNYFLEC members and allow them the opportunity to express themselves creatively, while receiving recognition for their efforts.

One of the most vital and involved professional organizations in Western New York, WNYFLEC works hard for its members.

Membership in WNYFLEC is still one of the best deals to be found!

WNYFLEC is Going Green !

With today's worries over the economy, excessive consumption, carbon footprints and the like, WNYFLEC has recognized the need to cut costs and to do its part to improve the environment by making a commitment to Go Green. While we are, of course, committed to bringing the membership important information through our quarterly newsletter mailings, we simply cannot deny that the act of mass printing, even on recycled paper, is an costly process that contributes negatively to the environment in such ways as deforestation, the alteration of ecosystems and pollution. Therefore, as part of its Go Green initiative, WNYFLEC will cease to mass mail paper copies of its newsletters starting July 1st, 2009.

After July 1st, 2009, members will have access to an electronic version of the newsletter to read online and/or to print only that which they need from the current issue. Members will receive electronic notifications of the availability of each newsletter issue through a new WNYFLEC Listserv. To ensure that you receive these notifications, and in turn, access to our newsletter, you must verify/update your email address information with our Membership Chair by July 1st, 2009. Members who are unable to receive electronic notices due to limited or restricted computer or email access must submit a request in writing to our Corresponding Secretary by July 1st, 2009 to continue to be sent paper copies of the newsletter.

Please help WNYFLEC meet its goal to Go Green by either verifying/updating your email information with our Membership Chair, or, in the case of restricted computer access, notifying our Corresponding Secretary of your need to continue receiving paper copies of the newsletter. In either case, members must explicitly notify WNYFLEC of their need/preference. Members who do not verify or update their email addresses, or who do not request hard copies in writing, risk no longer receiving WNYFLEC newsletters in any format.

Don't waste time - verify/update your email address OR explicitly request to receive hard copies of the newsletter TODAY!
