Lend a Hand !
WNYFLEC is an organization that is only as strong as the involvement of its members.
Please consider volunteering with the organization in some capacity. We are always
looking for individuals to assist with Regional Conference planning, STAR Awards
planning, publicity, event registration and more! To help with any of these or other
tasks, please click the Volunteer page on the main menu.

Anthony Papalia Award
To assist the recipient in pursuing a course in his or her Masters degree in Foreign
Language Education or to further his or her graduate education studies. Anthony Papalia Award application

Maryalice Seagrave Outstanding Foreign Language Teacher Award
A prestigious recognition of an outstanding foreign language teacher who is also
active and involved in professional activities for the school district and the language
profession. Maryalice Seagrave application is available here. Application must be received by Amanda
Repasky by March 25, 2010.
Teacher Incentive Grant
To enable recipients to develop new materials or techniques to enrich language teaching
and learning in the foreign language classroom. Teacher Incentive Grant application is available here. Send

Friend of Foreign Language Award
To recognize an individual outside of the teaching profession who is a strong advocate
for the study of foreign language and culture. Friend of Foreign Language application is available here. Applications must be received
by Amanda Repasky by March 25, 2010.
Service Award
A prestigious recognition usually awarded to a member, not necessarily an officer,
who is outstanding in performing for the association, and is active and involved
in the language profession. Service Award application is available here. Applications must be
received by Amanda Repasky by March 25, 2010.

WNYFLEC S.T.A.R. Awards Ceremony
WNYFLEC S.T.A.R. Awards Ceremony(Student, Teacher And Recognition Awards)

Purpose:
To honor the outstanding foreign language students of WNYFLEC members, and the teachers
themselves.
Nominations:
Any teacher who is a WNYFLEC member may nominate up to three (3)students to participate
in the awards program. Nominations consist of completing a Nomination Form and enclosing
$7 per student to help cover the cost of the program dinner. Teachers should plan to attend as they will be included in
the ceremony, and will therefore need to enclose an additional $15 to cover the
cost of their own dinner. The S.T.A.R. NOMINATION FORM will be available in March 2010 and is due to WNYFLEC by April 17,
2010. Teacher nominations for WNYFLEC professional awards (Maryalice Seagrave, etc.)are
due by March 25, 2010.
Process:
(1)Teacher nominates student(s) - complete Nomination Form and include with fee
payable to WNYFLEC. (2) WNYFLEC sends a letter to parents inviting them to the Awards
Ceremony and Dinner(RSVP must meet deadline). (Note: Price paid by family for student's dinner is an additional
$10; price for family members or friends to attend dinner with student is $17 each). (3) If student(s)
cannot attend, a certificate will be sent to the teacher for disbursement to the
student. (4) Nominating teachers should plan on attending as they will be included
in the ceremony. (Again, an additional $15 should be included with the student Nomination
Form to cover the cost of the nominating teacher's dinner.) Teachers who are WNYFLEC
Award nominees (Maryalice Seagrave, Service Award, Anthony Papalia) will receive
their dinner free of charge, courtesy of WNYFLEC. However, teacher award nominees must still
RSVP. (5)ALL STUDENTS, FAMILIES, AND TEACHERS MUST RSVP FOR THIS EVENT BY MAY 15,
2010. RSVPs received after May 15, 2010 cannot be guaranteed a spot, and WALK-INS
WILL NOT BE PERMITTED!!
Criteria:
A student should be selected for nomination based on any or all of the following:
(1) Outstanding achievement in the foreign language; (2) Outstanding effort; (3)
Appreciation of the value of studying other languages and cultures; (4) Interest
in pursuing further foreign language study. A WNYFLEC teacher (or an associate of
a WNYFLEC teacher) should be selected for WNYFLEC Award nomination based on criteria
stated in each individual award description, available at the top of this page.

The Awards Ceremony has been restructured to serve as a ceremony to recognize both
outstanding students and their teachers. Official ceremony date will be announced
for June 2010, with a 6:00pm check-in and 6:30pm dinner. Awards presentation will
immediately follow.
For any other questions on the Awards Program, contact any Board Member. At the
ceremony, in addition to honoring the Outstanding Students and Teachers, we will
also be honoring the WNYFLEC Poster Contest Winners.
NOTE: Winners of the national foreign language exams will not be lauded at this
year's ceremony.

Theme:
Feed The Need For Foreign Language
Requirements:
Posters should be done on 18" x 24" poster board with 2" margins at the top and
bottom. Posters should be black and white only, with no copyrighted images. Prize:
$25.00 cash and a certificate of participation for winners in each division (K-5,
6-8, 9-12), and a Grand Prize Winner, who, in addition to receiving a $50 cash prize
and a certificate of participation, will also have his or her poster duplicated
for distribution at the WNYFLEC Regional Conference.

Entries must be received by Carol Wirth of Orchard Park Middle School by January
15, 2010.
